I’m feeling better after spending two days of rest in the tent. Today, we did an acclimatization hike to almost 18,000’. One of the great challenges of high altitude is letting go of the ego. It’s hard to go so slow, at your own pace, when you know how quickly you can move at lower altitudes. Listening to your own body vs. trying to compete with others is something I am continually trying to improve. It looks like we have two more nights at basecamp and we are planning to move to interim camp on May 2 and advanced basecamp May 3, weather and health depending! I am excited and nervous to get up higher on the mountain.#climbforequality #everest2019Photo: @rob.lea @fattire #thenbeer @keen #keenambassador

These are probably not the photos that you want to see, and they are definitely not what I want to show but this is real life right now. On my second day at basecamp (17,000’/5,181m), I came down with some flu like symptoms (headache, cough, sore throat, body aches) and I have spent most of the last two days posted up in my tent while the rest of the team has been exploring the surrounding area. Of course, in moments like these, it’s easy to panic and for the mind to go to a dark place. “I’m such a failure, why does this always happen to me?” But I’m trying to distract myself, not stress and realize I have time to recover. Today, I feel about 20% better than yesterday and I’m hoping tomorrow will be even better. There are few things worse than being sick when you are traveling, it’s even worse when you’re camping. Luckily, I have a heated electric blanket, @rob.lea and the amazing @alpenglowexpeditions team to take care of me. Fingers crossed that I continue to improve! #everest2019

Today, we arrived at base camp and saw our first views of Everest/Chomolungma. Chomolungma, the Tibetan name for Everest, means “Mother Goddess of the Universe.” If the mountain is a mother, then it is in our best interest to elevate the status of women, girls and mothers around the world. That’s why I #climbforequality. Because the way we treat women sets the tone for how we treat the environment. I want to help disrupt implicit bias so we can see more women getting to the top. @keen #keenambassador

Capturing this footage of my Everest/Chomolungma training back home in Utah was super easy thanks to ViewFinder. With @rylo, I can focus on the climb and pick the perfect angle after I shoot. Check out @rylo to see how I got this shot and others!#storiesthatmove #climbforequality

After 42 hours of travel, we made it to Lhasa. Packing was a challenge. The travel was a challenge with a missed connection and an unplanned airport bivy (the airport in Taiyuan we were rerouted through closed for the night, so we spent a few hours outside). I’ve been continuing to practice staying positive when things don’t go as planned. All in all, we’re feeling healthy and good! The long hours of travel cause my knee to swell up, but it’s feeling better after 10 hours of sleep last night. Today, we begin the 3 day drive to base camp. There is nothing easy about climbing Everest. That includes getting there. I’m grateful for the opportunity! Happy earth day everyone and happy birthday to my brother, David Gleich, and @rob.lea’s dad, Jim Lea! #climbforequality @keen #keenambassador
