Honeycomb Opens at Solitude!

This weekend, my friend and fellow Big Cottonwood Canyon ripper, Jason West called me up to see if I wanted to come ski in a television program being filmed at Brighton and Solitude for Snow Mad TV.  On Friday, we warmed up with a couple of groomers, and then went underneath Milicent lift and hiked for some amazingly deep powder turns!  On Saturday, we were fortunate enough to have Honeycomb canyon open for the first time this season for the shoot.  I was pleasantly surprised by how filled-in most of the lines were and how good the quality of the snow had stayed days after the storm.  Check out this photo from the day:

My Signature Hat

When my hat sponsor, Shred Alert, asked me if I wanted to design a signature hat for their 08-09 line, I was absolutely ecstatic.  After submitting my design and coming up with some samples, I was even more excited to find out that REI will be carrying my signature hat in all of their stores next year!  You will be able to purchase the Caroline Gleich signature hat in stores nationwide.  Check out the photos and let me know what you think!IMG_2309

School Outreach Programs

This winter, one of my ongoing projects  is working with the local schools in Salt Lake and Park City to expose the youth to freeride skiing and snowboarding.  Axis Freeride and the Youth Wintersports Alliance have already sent me to 4 schools where I have set up a mini-trampoline onto a big porta-pad to simulate the feeling of dropping into a jump on skis and catching some air.  We take over their gym classes, and teach straight airs, grabs, spread eagles, daffies, 180s, 360s, and on from there!  After the in-school demonstration, we give the kids wristbands that have a website where they can sign up for a free on-snow intro to freeride, which will be held at the Utah Olympic Park.  I’m so excited to taking on this exciting project.  Check out some of the pictures from Trailside Elementary in Park City.

Alta Opening Day

Slowly but surely, all of the Cottonwood Canyons resorts have opened!  I couldn’t be happier.  To top it all off, we got a good storm this weekend that brought 10" of fresh to our mountains.  I was delighted to awaken to a fresh blanket of snow covering the entire Salt Lake Valley this morning.  Here are a few photos from opening day of me and my friends.IMG_1260 IMG_1271 IMG_1270

I woke up the day after Thanksgiving, or “Black Friday” as it is often called, feeling still slightly groggy from the overindulgence in Tryptophan in the turkey. As I got out of bed, I started contemplating how to spend this glorious day without work or school obligations. It felt so good to have a day of freedom, a day to myself. I had heard about all the great sales going on, and almost thought about going down to the mall to get a head start on my Christmas shopping (and to see if there were any good deals for me). However, as I was getting dressed, I realized that I hate the mall when it is crowded; the brushing up against other customer’s while shifting through an over-merchandised rack and the lines and the lack of attention from the sales people. I decided instead that my time would be much better spent going up to Solitude to take a couple of runs and find my inner-peace. As I made those first couple of turns down the wide-open groomer (Apex is now open!), I was so thankful not to be trying to find a parking spot in the mall garage. So this weekend, instead of stressing yourself out trying to find that perfect gift (Internet shopping is always great), give yourself a treat and head up to the mountains. Trust me, it’s a much better way to spend your money and you will feel so much better at the end of the day.
