Memorial Couloirs off Mount Olympus

Loved by tourists but feared by locals, it’s the busiest ski weekend of the year: Presidents’ Day weekend. We knew the ski resorts and Cottonwood backcountry would be packed so we decided to go someplace new. We teamed up with Jim Harris and Allison Schwam for a double ski date – they suggested the memorial couloirs off Mt Olympus. We were game. Always eager to explore a new zone, we figured it was a good option for a busy Saturday. We started from Neffs Canyon. Here are some shots from the day:

We largely had the mountain to ourselves. We only saw two splitboarders and their dog. Throw in a spicy ridge walk in sugary faceted snow and a bit of bushwhacking and you have all the elements for a great weekend adventure. That’s what I love so much about the Wasatch- there’s always more to explore.
