Hellgate Climbing

Ohhhhhhh it feels so good to be back on the rocks!  I barely climbed at all last summer and I missed it so much.  I’ve been training lately at Momentum Climbing gym to get some strength and endurance built up and tonight was my first night climbing outside in some time.  Jake Hollander and I went up to Hellgate in between Alta and Snowbird and the cool mountain breeze and grippy limestone felt absolutely amazing.  We only had time to do two routes on the newer section of the area, a 5.10 and a 5.11 and I’m feeling stronger than ever!  I have a number of climbing shoots coming up (including a big one with Getty in late fall) so check back for some good action soon, but here are some pictures from the evening:

Sleepless in Seattle

My parents were getting ready to leave for Seattle to visit my brother and his new wife and on a whim, I asked if I could come along.  I figured it would be better than spending the weekend at home with my 19-year-old brother and his partying friends.  They booked me a ticket Thursday night, and on Friday night, I departed to Seattle.

As soon as I touched down, the family swooped me up in the rental Impala and we went to one of the finest sushi restaurants in Seattle, Nishino.  I knew I was in for a treat and as soon as I laid my eyes on the menu, my mouth began to water.  Before we ate any food, however, we were given hot, wet wash cloth–an Oshibori–and it felt wonderful having just gotten off the airplane.  I began my meal with miso and hot clams, a deep red soup with a mild ocean flavor and a seaweed salad that tasted like it had been in a ginger ponzu marinade.  We had oyster tempera that was so fresh it felt like a wave misting the taste buds and a unique foie gras an shitake mushroom appetizer that was served in a thick, rich soy red wine reduction sauce.  The blackened cod in a light miso sauce was better than candy–flaky and succesulent and the fish peeled away like I’ve never seen fish do before.  We had soft-shell crab with ponzu and sashimi wrapped around fresh arugala.  The banana tempura desert with lychee and chocolate mochi was the perfect finish to an exceptional meal.

5 Stars!!!!!

After that meal, we went back to my brother’s 2-bedroom condo, and I slept on the floor all weekend–hence the title.

Saturday we went up the Olympic Peninsula.  We spent many hours in the car, but once we got there, we climbed trees and hiked around the beach.

It was a great, short weekend trip despite getting little-to-no sleep.

The Ocean

XLIX from The Book of Questions by Pablo Neruda

¿Cuando veo de nuevo el mar

el mar me ha visto o no me ha visto?

¿Por qué me preguntan las olas

lo mismo que yo les pregunto?

¿Y por qué golpean la roca

con tanto entusiasmo perdido?

¿No se cansan de repetir

su declaración a la arena?

When I see the sea once more

Will the sea have seen or not seen me?

Why do the waves ask me

the same questions I ask them?

And why do they strike the rock?

with so much wasted passion?

Don’t they get tired of repeating

their declaration to the sand?

Roxy Pop Drop on Powder.com

Roxy camper and journalist Vanessa Pierce wrote a great piece on the camp for Powder.com.  There’s also a photo gallery with never before published pictures by Lynsey Dyer.

Here’s an excerpt from the story:

"You’ve got to do a Pinwheel," says Olympic silver medalist Shannon Bahrke as she overhears Roxy Pop Drop coach Caroline Gleich and I pondering our next trick at the Olympic Park splash pool in Park City, Utah.

"A Pinwheel, oh yeah," says Gleich. "So all you have to do is a back flip and I’ll do a front flip." No big deal. Except, we had to do it together. From the top of the "single" ramp at the splash pool, Gleich and I held hands. "Let go, let go, let go," she says as we pick up speed and are about to hit the tranny. No big deal.
